Throughout the duration of this experience, students will get the opportunity to experience firsthand how the Avera facilities utilize telehealth to expand their capabilities in rural communities.

The program is 40 hours in duration and is broken down as follows:

12-hours | Online Pre-Experience Training

Telehealth Core Concepts certificate

Health Informatics training modules

Telehealth training modules

Cyber security modules

28-hours | Shadowing/Hand-on Training

8-hour site visit in Sioux Fall at Avel & Avera McKennan

20-hour shadowing placement in a rural health facility

Summer 2023 Information:

Students who participate in the Summer 2023 cohort will be required to attend the day in Sioux Falls on either July 28 OR August 11. 

Shadowing placement sites will be limited to the number of students they accept. Decisions will be made as applications are received and until placement site spots are filled. 

Placement sites include: 

• Avera St. Benedict (Parkston) with some time spent at Avera Queen of Peace (Mitchell) | 2 students

• Wagner Community Memorial Hospital (Wagner) | 2 – 4 students 

• Avera St. Mary’s (Pierre) | 2 students

• Platte Health Center with some time spent at Avera Queen of Peace (Mitchell) | 2 students

• Landmann-Jungman Memorial Hospital (Scotland) with some time spent at Avera Sacred Heart (Yankton) | 2 students

• Avera St. Luke’s (Aberdeen) | 2 students
